Aaron Lavers has been named the Town of Wasaga Beach’s Athlete of the Year.
The local man received the honour during a special presentation on Sunday.
“On behalf of town council and staff, I congratulate Aaron on this significant honour – His exemplary character and sportsmanship, combined with his skill on the football field, make him a deserving recipient,” says Mayor Nina Bifolchi.
Lavers earned a silver medal as a linebacker while playing for the U16 Team Ontario in 2019.
At the regional level, he has been a member of the Huronia Stallions for 11 years. He also has served as a team captain at the varsity level. During the 2021 season, Lavers was ranked the second best defensive player in the regional league and best overall linebacker in the county.
At the local level, Lavers played high school football for Collingwood Collegiate in Grade 9 and 10, serving as team captain for both seasons. In his senior year, he played for Eastview Secondary School in Barrie in 2021-2022, where the team progressed to the SCAA finals. Lavers was named team captain and defensive most valuable player.
Lavers also played hockey through Wasaga Beach Minor Hockey from Chip to Bantam.
“I coached Aaron at Collingwood Collegiate Institute in 2019 where he helped lead us to a SCAA and GBSSA championship,” said Brandon Kempster, who nominated Lavers. “I was so fortunate to have a leader like Aaron. He made my job easy. He showed up ready to work every day, and stayed after practice to get as many reps in as possible to ensure his best performance on the field.”
Kempster said Lavers is an overall good young man.
“He displays great attitude. Aaron is polite, and humble, always willing to work, or change something in order to improve,” Kempster said.
