Who doesn’t love a beautiful gelato on a hot summer’s day? No one….that’s who! (If you don’t like gelato….ummmm…I’m not exactly sure what to say about that…..but seriously, are you okay?)
Over in Italy however, they love their gelato. It’s a big part of their culture and identity, and they take it very seriously. They don’t want anyone soiling their outstanding gelato reputation with the fake, artificially enhanced stuff. It really is an art form
Have you ever wondered how gelato gets its light, fluffy, colourful textures and flavours? Some gelato makers add a little extra air here and there, or a little extra food colouring to make the desert really pop! And it works, sometimes just walking by a gelato shop and seeing those big fluffy mounds of colourful deliciousness is enough to make me stop and buy some.
But the gelato purists are taking a stand. Recently, 6 Italian senators proposed a new legislation that would fine gelato makers who add excessive air, synthetic dyes, artificial flavours, or hydrogenated fats to enhance the look of their product. If this law passes, anyone caught adding anything artificial to their gelato will be fined up to 10,000 euros!! ($14,990 CAD….yikes!)
The proposal has officially been sent to the Italian Senate’s Commerce and Tourism Commission, so we’ll have to stay tuned for the ultimate decision. #Protectgelatoatallcosts #gelatopuritylaw #imadethosehastagsup
